SSQI Online Insomnia Test: Simplified Sleep Quality Index
Why is sleep quality important?
We all know that it is important to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. But did you know that sleep quality should also be taken into account?
Poor sleep quality can have serious negative effects including an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. People who are not well rested can also experience increased irritability, moodiness and even develop conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Besides this, safety is also compromised when there is a lack of sleep quality. Driving while sleep deprived can result in accidents, injuries and even death. Work performance also decreases significantly when one does not get good quality sleep.
Factors that affect sleep quality
Poor sleep quality can be a result of:
Irregular sleep schedules – A set bedtime and wake up time everyday can greatly improve sleep.
Unsuitable sleeping environment – Rooms should be sleep conducive: quiet, dark and free of devices that emit blue light
Too much caffeine or alcohol – Caffeine and alcohol can disrupt your sleep schedule and sleep quality.
Sleep disorders – Sleep disorders such as insomnia can lead to poor sleep quality.
Mental health issues – People who are struggling with anxiety and depression often find it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. Waking up numerous times in the middle of the night will definitely affect sleep quality.
Lifestyle – Poor diet, unhealthy weight, and travelling across time zones are also factors that can impact the quality of your sleep.
